It’s now official, Respawn Entertainment’s new battle royale game Apex Legends was successful enough to bring in more than 10 million players in just 72 hours after launch. It was a very different and risky move to release the game as a total surprise but after looking at the player statistics, it was a very good decision.
Reaching 10 million players in just 72 hours is a big achievement for Respawn. Not even Fortnite managed to do this well which reached the same number of players in about 2 weeks. The CEO of Respawn revealed these record-breaking numbers in a blog-post while also thanking all the players. He mentioned that it was a risky decision to take the franchise into this new direction.
Vince Zampella said:
This has been a truly incredible journey. We tested and tweaked. We argued and agreed. We got to a point where we felt some magic. We knew it would be risky to take the franchise in this direction, to go free to play, and do a surprise launch. But we fell in love with Apex Legends and wanted, needed, other people to play it too.
We hoped you’d love it as much as us, but never in our wildest dreams could we have expected the outpouring of support and positivity we’ve seen.
In addition to the aforementioned player count, Vince Zampella said that Apex reached 1 million concurrent players. Also, this is just the beginning as the developer has promised that there’s a lot more to come this year.
If you haven’t played Apex Legends already then try it out today to increase player numbers furthermore as it’s available free of cost on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC. The game takes place in the Titanfall universe but without big robots. There are a total of 60 players in each match and you can team up with up to 2 players only as it’s 3v3. Each character in the game has a unique ability which differentiates it from other battle royale games.
The first Apex Legends update is now available for Xbox One players without any detailed patch notes but players are reporting new issues like getting stuck on the loading screen.
