Warframe is one of the best free-to-play titles out there whose quality can only be matched by its popularity. The game was developed using Digital Extremes’ proprietary Evolution engine which the studio tried to license to other devs but backed off because it couldn’t afford a support team.

Speaking with PCGamesN, vice president of publishing Meridtih Braun talked about the time when Digital Extremes thought about licensing its proprietary Evolution engine, which was used to develop Warframe.

However, the studio quickly realized that they underestimated the resources that would be required to pitch the game engine to other developing studios and realized that it wasn’t their cup of tea.

Not long after that we actually hired a business development person to go around and pitch to the industry. We underestimated the amount of resources it requires to then put together an engine team who are focused on external clients, and so we realised pretty quickly that it wasn’t our wheelhouse and something we would not continue pursuing

However, this was back in 2006 when the studio was working Dark Sector, the first game to be developed using the Evolution engine. Since then the studio has evolved thanks to Warframe but, there are already a lot of game engines in the market that developers can license for their games such as Unreal Engine, Unity and more.

While the studio might be able to afford a support team for its Warframe game engine to license it to other developers but, it would be difficult for the studio to compete with the likes of Unreal Engine and Unity engine.

Speaking of the Warframe, following the success of the game on current-gen consoles and PC the developers have announced that they will be bringing the game to Nintendo Switch soon.
